Transition Program School-to-Work: We believe all children, despite their presenting behavior and social background, want acceptance, achievement, knowledge and the ability to interact successfully with others.
Our challenge is finding the key that unlocks the individual potential of each student in a warm, nurturing environment, which allows their potentials to flourish.
Our Goals...
- Build a positive self-image through appropriate social interaction
- Develop understanding of rules as vehicles for success
- Meet individual student needs with a rich multi-task approach
- Ready students for the working world with career education
- Heighten social awareness through community and school service
- Communicate with parents to help educate the whole child
School to Work Mission
The transition from school to work is often difficult for young people, especially those with disabilities. Shepard Academy has created
a transitions program with the aim of not only fostering the required independent life skills, but also by providing opportunities to step out into the community for real life experiences that will translate into
a balanced blend of skills for life. The program consists of four main
areas of focus:
- Career Awareness
- Self Advocacy
- Independent/Daily Living Skills
- Community Participation
We believe that these skills coupled with real community based experience will help provide the needed foundation for students transitioning to work.
We provide...
Job Sampling
A community based vocational assessment that allows students to see first hand the inner working of real work environments. This sampling helps students create their own vocational assessment based on their preferences and abilities.
Supported Employment
This process occurs in three tiers: job development, job coaching and follow along services. This system allows students to participate in all aspects of a job and eventually transition to full time independent employment.
Self Advocacy Training
Focusing on creating independent skills that will foster a more functional social life. Areas include: proper communication skills, hygiene, peer interaction and appropriate behaviors.
Functional Skills
Shepard Schools Skills Room offers a unique area to teach essential employment skills such as workplace computer use, clerical and functional money skills.
Why Choose Shepard
