Shepard Schools - Academy
Shepard Academy:
Shepard Academy is a program for students with multiple disabilities, particularly acute learning and behavioral problems. Our students require highly individualized instruction not only in their academics, but also in their social abilities, daily living skills and vocational development.

Shepard Academy implements a curriculum which is aligned with the N.J. State Core Curriculum Standards. An emphasis is placed not only on academics, but also on preparation for post secondary experiences. We provide career exploration classes, work-study experiences, job sampling and job coaching. There is also a fifth year school to work transition program available.

Curriculum:
The Shepard Academy program centers on the individual growth of our students in the major content areas. These areas include: a Balanced Literacy approach to reading and writing that enables all students to learn and apply the needed strategies independently. The Academy offers a differentiated mathematics curriculum designed to assess current levels in mathematics and build on those skills through the introduction of geometric and algebraic concepts along with real life math applications. The science and social studies curricula offer a variety of hands on, multimedia, and discovery based opportunities focusing on the areas of Earth Science, Biology, Introduction to Chemistry, and Physical Science coupled with World History, United States History, and American Government. While fostering a solid academic foundation, Shepard Academy also offers Life Skills, a component that introduces the functional skills that are needed in becoming a well rounded adult. All of these areas are further supplemented with Physical Education and health, Art and Music Appreciation, Drama as well as Computer Literacy courses.
